Synopsis via Amazon: When Zoe Walker sees her photo in the classifieds section of a London newspaper, she is determined to find out why it’s there. There’s no explanation, just a grainy image and a blocked website. She takes it home to her family, who are convinced it’s just someone who looks like Zoe. But the next day the advert shows a photo of a different woman, and another the day after that. Is it a mistake? A coincidence? Or is someone keeping track of every move they make…
My Blurb: Clare Mackintosh’s debut novel, ‘I Let You Go’, was one of the unforgettable psychological thrillers I have read in 2016 because of its unexpected plot twist. Her second novel, which we know is an author’s make-it-or-break-it moment, is not a disappointment.
Zoe Walker has the same routine every day. She rides the same Tube in London. She goes to the same office job for years now. She walks the same streets to her house and does household chores for her two grown-ups and her boyfriend. She is okay and comfortable with her life until one day she spotted an advert with her grainy photo on it under the label “findtheone.com”. At first, she tries to shrug it off until she sees another woman’s photo which apparently has her keys stolen. Then comes another woman on the advert, this time, she was murdered. As fear grows in her, she gets really paranoid each day, knowing that stalker is just around her, watching every move she makes. Along with this, she becomes more suspicious even to those she personally knows. Here enters Kelly Swift, an ambitious and very talented cop who is very determined to correct her past mistakes and make a name for herself.
But what lies beneath this series of adverts is far larger than what she and the police anticipated. The photos are just the beginning…
Hit-and-Miss: Like I said, this book contains predatory issues which involve kidnapping and stalking and murder and a whole lot of paranoia. It will scare the heck out of you not because it has gore scenes, it’s damn scary because IT FEELS REAL and it can happen to anyone any time of the day. I swear by the thriller gods that this is something that you should read ONLY IF you are ready for the aftermath, because personally, after reading it (in a day) my commute to work and back home has never been the same. I have been looking around, afraid that someone is stalking me or following me. It’s absurd, but ultimately, I SEE YOU will give you chills for all the right (and scary) reasons. The characters are entertaining because you have to watch them very closely before making an assumption. I also would like to address the different POVs of the book, we see Zoe’s side, Kelly’s story and also snippets from the “stalker” – which played pretty well because it took me until the last 20 pages before I actually guessed who that person was.
What I would add… More background story of how the main culprit did what he/she did. It’s an interesting set-up, and I would really just like to go inside his/her head.
Verdict: Clare Mackintosh proves that the second time is also a charm. I like how she has shifted the tone of her books from a psychological thriller in ‘I Let You Go’ to a suspense thriller in ‘I See You’. Her voice in this genre is indeed powerful and should be really recognized. It’s highly recommendable but again, please, refer to my trigger warning.
Have you read any of her books? What’s yout favorite so far?
